Toenail Fungus Q & A

What is Toenail Fungus?

A toenail fungus, medically known as onychomycosis, is a fungus that gets underneath a toenail, where it can be difficult to access and treat effectively. This fungus is often found in warm and damp places, for example, the gym locker room or the local pool. Toenail fungus is easily spread. Podiatrists can effectively resolve toenail fungus in several different ways today.

How is Toenail Fungus Treated?

Toenail fungus is typically more challenging to treat than problems like Athlete's foot. Topical medications or oral antifungal medications have been the traditional treatment approach until recently. However, oral medications can have severe side effects in some cases and topical medications are not always as effective as desired. Today, the treatment of choice is laser therapy. Laser therapy for toenail fungus uses an FDA approved laser to focus a powerful light beam directly into the area beneath the nail, where it can eliminate the fungus.

What is the Recovery From Laser Toenail Fungus Treatment?

The laser toenail requires no downtime, and there is no pain associated with the treatment. The procedure is performed in the office and will usually take just minutes. Most people need around 3 sessions in total to completely eradicate the toenail fungus. Once the fungus is eliminated, it is important that patients are vigilant about foot care to keep fungus at bay in the future.

How Can Toenail Fungus Be Prevented?

Always keeping the feet clean and dry is important. Dry feet have a lower chance of getting infected. Before bed each night, wash and dry the feet, and then use an antifungal cream from the ankle to the toes. After taking a shower during the day, dry feet completely and then apply powder to help keep the feet dry. Always wear shoes, especially when in public places like locker rooms and public swimming pools.
