Sound Wave Treatment

What is sound wave treatment?

Sound wave treatment is a relatively new and promising treatment option for foot and ankle pain. It uses extracorporeal sound wave therapy (ESWT) — also called extracorporeal pulse activated therapy (EPAT) — to address areas of localized pain with acoustic waves.

This treatment is completely noninvasive. Dr. McMahon uses the ESWT device from Medical Wave to direct these sound waves into the tissue that’s causing your pain. This stimulation triggers regeneration in the area and improves circulation while also reducing pain sensitivity.

Moreover, it can cause damaged soft tissue to break down, relieving pain from chronic conditions while making way for new, healthy tissue development.

What conditions can sound wave treatment address?

Sound wave treatment has been shown to treat effectively:

  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Morton’s neuroma
  • Ankle sprains
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Localized foot or ankle pain

In other words, if you have a specific part of your foot or ankle that’s hurting you, don’t hesitate to ask Dr. McMahon if sound wave treatment could be right for you.

He offers this treatment as an alternative to much more invasive procedures so that you have a way to address foot or ankle pain without any injections or incisions.

What should I expect during sound wave treatment?

A large part of the draw of sound wave treatment is that it’s comfortable, noninvasive, and comes with no downtime. The procedure itself usually takes only 15 minutes. Dr. McMahon applies gel to the treatment area, then moves the ESWT device over the target, sending the acoustic waves into it. There is minimal discomfort during the procedure.

Some people achieve their desired pain relief results with just a series of three to five treatments; Others choose a series of sessions for more dramatic results. Dr. McMahon personalizes your treatment plan based on your specific foot or ankle condition and works with you throughout to ensure you’re getting the pain relief you need.
