Heel pain may have many different causes. Plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis are both very common causes of heel pain. While most causes of heel pain are biomechanical in nature, it could be caused by other things like a bone infection, a chronic condition like arthritis, an autoimmune system issue, or a neurological issue. Regardless of the reason for heel pain, most causes of heel pain can be successfully resolved with the help of a skilled podiatrist.
The cause of heel pain if most often plantar fasciitis. This condition happens when the plantar fascia, the tendon attaching to the heel and continuing along the bottom of the foot, is swollen, inflamed, and tightened. A good deal of the swelling and tightening happens during the night during sleep. That means that the first step of the day can be a very painful one because the tendon is trying to stretch out again. While the pain of plantar fasciitis does tend to improve after that first step, it will return again after any period of being off the feet.
The treatment for heel pain depends in large part on the specific condition causing the pain. It also depends on the severity of the pain and the other symptoms that the patient may be experiencing. Many people with plantar fasciitis and other conditions that cause heel pain will experience significant symptom relief with the use of orthotic devices. Rest, ice treatments, and proper footwear can all do a great deal to alleviate symptoms as well. There are several special exercises that the podiatrist can teach to patients who suffer from heel pain. These exercises can help stretch and strengthen, which will reduce the chance of similar pain in the future.
