  • Please tell us about your experience with our practice:
    • This practice is outstanding and competent. I came to ACFAC dispirited and at the end of many other consultations about ankle pain. I thought I was literally going to be lame fot the rest of my life, but Dr.M listened and methodically figured out and most importantly, fixed my injury! I am active again thanks to him!
  • How were you feeling before coming into our office?
    • Depressed—nobody had correctly diagnosed or fixed my ankle injury. Dr. M was last chance.
  • How did the staff treat you?
    • Great! Always cheerful, respectful.
  • What can you do now that you couldn’t do before?
    • I can run pain-free without damaging my ankle joint.YAY!
  • Would you recommend our office to friends and family?
    • Absolutely. I have recommended ad much as I can already!

Additional comments:

Thank you, Dr. McMahon for fixing my ankle. When I arrived at your office, as you know, I had been unsuccessfully treated by several other doctors. This had really been “pigeon- holed” into a quick 30-second diagnosis with years and fortunes of wasted effort on wrong diagnoses. I really thought the running days were over. I had almost completely given up. I was so very heartened when you exceedingly carefully listened to my story and took notes. Rather than make an impulsive diagnosis you asked to have time to reflect and review records/images. This alone, distinguished yourself immediately! I wasn’t gonna be sent down a path based on a 20-second analysis. When I returned to discuss your thoughts, you had a differential and plans to narrow it. You’d consulted a radiologist and had narrowed down some images to match my story (that you recounted! Amazing) As we worked through the diagnosis and eventually solved a torn structure along with an almost torn one, I was so grateful. Your process made sense. You apprised me of your thoughts. You were prepared for my visits. You responded quickly to the PT, etc. And I understand you were quite deliberate, unhurried and precise during what was surprisingly long surgical stint. Thank you so very much for your listening, thinking and systematic execution of good care! I will never be able to thank you enough and you are with me in spirit each time I run—which I hope is for the rest of my life!

Additional comments:

I am so grateful to Dr. McMahon for all he has done for me. He treated my problem non-surgically for a period of time but when we could not get the full resolution of my symptoms he said the problem needed surgery and he was right.  In the end, my problem needed surgery to fix the issue and then the right shoe and orthotic to keep it that way.

Dr. McMahon is very knowledgeable and very friendly. He is also very caring and is an expert in his field.

I started the 2014 season with pain in both feet from dual Morton Neuromas, inflammation of the nerves in the ball of each foot. After just a few miles of running, I’d have the sensation of running with a lit match under both feet… At mile four or five the pain would become so intense it would feel as if a nail had been driven into my feet. My right foot was far worse than the left.

I attended the Richmond Endurance Symposium and met Dr. John McMahon. We began the process of addressing the problem and determining next steps, which included cortisone shots, prescription time released anti-inflammatory medication and topical anesthesia cream. Dr. McMahon also took impressions of both feet and fit me with custom orthotics.

The orthotics took a few weeks to acclimate to, but the combination of medication and orthotics greatly reduced the pain and completely eliminated the acute pain. In fact, I was able to complete a full Ironman at Chattanooga in September of last year! I used the orthotics in both my biking and running shoes, and the topical anesthesia cream throughout the race. I’ve learned two big lessons…

First, if you’re planning to race distance runs you need to be preemptive in your anticipation of problems and possible solutions. I wish I had preemptively used orthotic supports and thus avoided the problem altogether.

Second, Dr. McMahon is himself a triathlete and runner. He understands my goals and supports my objectives. I’d much rather work with a healthcare professional that understands endurance athletes than one who doesn’t.

  • Please tell us about your experience with our practice:
    • Everyone is extremely courteous and patient. There’s a good atmosphere in the office.
  • How were you feeling before coming into our office?
    • Scared and uneasy about the treatment of my son’s Jones fracture after seeing two doctors prior ( an orthopedist and podiatrist).
  • How did the staff treat you?
    • The staff treated us very well. They listened to us and were very accommodating
  • What can you do now that you couldn’t do before?
    • My son is pain-free and able to resume playing basketball.
  • Would you recommend our office to friends and family?
    • Absolutely!

Additional comments:

Dr. McMahon is very knowledgeable and direct with his treatment plan of a Jones fracture. The combination of physical therapy, frequent doctor visits and the use of the bone stimulator and calcium with vitamin D has been a tremendous help. My son’s total treatment time was 5 months and this includes seeing an orthopedic doctor and anther podiatrist before seeing Dr. McMahon. Dr. McMahon knows what he is doing to treat a Jones fracture. Treating my son aggressively without the use of surgery was the best option. Dr. McMahon and his staff were instrumental in my son’s recovery. I am very pleased with the outcome. My son is pain-free, has his balance back and is able to resume basketball and all other physical activities full time.

Thank you for a job well done

-Jocelyn

August 2013

Dear Dr. McMahon,

“Thank you” seems quite inadequate to express my gratitude for everything you have done for me. When other orthopedic surgeons decided that amputation was their final decision for the treatment for my condition, you were the only Physician who offered to work with me to save my foot and leg. You were always positive and encouraging to me. You made me believe that everything would be alright. I am sure the eight-hour surgery you performed must have been quite challenging. I am glad that I was asleep, but I’m also glad you were not. What a life altering effect you have had on me. The fact that I am able to walk and still have my limb is all because of you.I will always be thankful to you and to God for the wonderful outcome that I have experienced.Thank you a million times over.  You are truly an outstanding Physician and my very good friend.

Dr. McMahon is an excellent physician. He is knowledgeable, trustworthy and most importantly, listens to his patients. My initial visit to his office was for an ankle injury that was not healing. He took the time to listen to how the injury was sustained and what past medical treatment I had sought. He listened to my individual health needs/concerns and communicated the best course of action for my case. His staff is friendly and always smiling. I will continue to recommend Adult & Child foot & Ankle Care to my family and friends!

Foot update! : )
Hey Dr. McMahon,

My feet are doing GREAT!!!!!
I went to Florida to race an Olympic distance triathlon this weekend and set a new PR for the distance... 2 minutes faster than my former personal record. Plus, I wound up placing 1st in my division and 4th female overall.

With running, I built back gradually and wore the orthotics and am now faster than before! : )
Thanks so much for all your work to make me better! I am really grateful. Please tell all of your team how much I appreciate them as well. For the treatment, support and helping me come back from the injuries. They were so kind through it all. I can't thank you guys enough. Thanks!!!!!!!

- Kelly, Midlothian, VA, 33yo female competitive triathlete

November 2013

Thank you, Dr. McMahon! It's impossible to express all the gratitude that is in my heart. After my accident, I never thought I would get back to doing the things I love to do, but after the surgery you performed, I am happy to say, I'm doing all that I couldn't do before. Thank you for listening and for all you have done to help make my life pain-free.

- Linda, Powhatan, VA

December 2013

I would like to take a moment to share our experience with Dr. John McMahon, Jr. Back in May 2013, I brought my son to see Dr. McMahon. At the time, he was a junior in high school and had finished his junior year playing varsity football at Powhatan High School. Between the end of one season, and the beginning of the next, he sustained an injury to his ankle during a softball game. After being x-rayed, and nothing found wrong, my son’s ankle was still hurting. I decided to bring him to Adult & Child Foot & Ankle Care.

Dr. McMahon immediately did another x-ray, then ordered an MRI on my son's ankle. It was determined that he had torn ligaments and tendons. One of which was from a previous football injury. Our best option to have my son ready for his senior year football season was to do surgery and aggressive physical therapy throughout the summer of 2013.

We chose to have the surgery with Dr. McMahon and have never regretted it.  My son’s ankle is fully healed and even stronger than it was before. Dr. McMahon truly shows genuine caring for his patients.

He has care and concern that you don’t see in larger practices. He followed up with me and my son all the way until the end of football season. He kept in touch with our athletic trainer and the physical therapist to monitor his progress and collectively make decisions regarding my son’s ankle. He even called on the weekends after the surgery to check on my son.

This was truly a scary decision for us and my son’s future and you always hope you are making the right decision. As a result of the surgery my son went on to win many honors in his senior year football season, all of which were possible because Dr. McMahon is truly a great surgeon. He also made sure that my son had proper shoe inserts in his cleats.  I write all of this because it is the least I can do to show my appreciation for Dr. McMahon and all of his professional, genuine staff. Thank you, Adult & Child Foot and Ankle Care.

- Sincerely, April, Powhatan, VA

January 2013

I first met Dr. McMahon in October 2011 after relocating to the area. Before meeting Dr. McMahon, during the previous three years I had six surgical operations on the same foot numerous hospital stays, weekly doctor visits, and many months of limited or no ability to walk.

Dr. McMahon changed all that. Within a few months, thanks to his treatment, his recommendation for an advanced form of foot brace, and his patience and caring, I could walk again. Since then I continue to live a normal life and walk as life requires. I will always be grateful to Dr. McMahon for giving me my LIFE back.
